An Elf's Mission

One day like any other, Joey, the elf,  got up, got dressed in his work uniform, had oatmeal for breakfast and left apartment 217 to go work at the Toy Factory for Santa Claus. When he got there, he checked in and went to go work in the doll department for eight hours with only a fifteen minute break for the whole day. Joey doesn't live a very exciting life. He is a short, plump elf who has lived alone like he has been for the past twenty years. The only friend he has is a little, fat mouse he calls Whiskers, and the only mail he gets is from work saying that he is going to have to work overtime because it is so close to Christmas.
Again Joey got up, got dressed, had breakfast, and left for work. When he was working three hours in the doll department there was an unexpected announcement.
"Attention all elves, you are dismissed from your duties for the rest of the day and all days until Christmas. Please do not ask any questions and go home!"
This was different, the only announcements that ever occurred were the ones at the end of the day saying work was over.  He had such a lonely, dull life, he wanted to find out why they all had to leave work so close to Christmas.
While all the elves cleared out of the room Joey went to go hide in the supply closet and planned to sneak around and listen to what was going on around here.
"Yo, Larry it's clear, and why did you want me to make that announcement anyway?" questioned Bob, who was the same elf who made the announcement.
"Because Christmas has been around way too long!" exclaimed Larry.
After Larry and Bob left the room Joey came out, snuck upstairs to where Santa was always glued to his office chair and checking the naughty and nice list, one too many times. When Joey got up to Santa's office, he stopped at the door and hid behind the corner because he heard someone trying to tell Mr. Claus that everything was going to be okay. When that someone was coming out of the office Joey held his breath to make sure no one heard him.  It was Larry with a big ol' smile on his face!
"Looks like Larry is playing both sides of the fence," Joey whispered to himself when it was all clear.
After Larry was long gone out of the hallway, Joey knocked on the office door and poked his head in and said, "Excuse me, Santa?"
"Yes? Who are you and why are you all the way up on the second floor and not working?"
"Well sir, I came up to see why we all had to leave. I mean, I wouldn't mind a day off but why are we all leaving right before Christmas?"
Santa just sat there for a minute scratching his long, white, ice- like beard, wondering,"Why did you all go home?" he asked finally.
"Well, you see Mr. Santa Sir, someone over the intercom said we all need to go home and do not come back until after Christmas"
"Do you know who this is,  Mr........"
"Just call me Joey, Sir," said Joey.
"Well, then Joey do you know who said that over the intercom?"
"Yes, I do, but you probably won't believe me. Larry had Bob say that announcement but Bob didn't know why, he just did it because Larry is your assistant and all. The only reason I know all of this is because I hid in the closet to come and ask you when I heard them talking, so I actually overheard all of this," explained Joey.
After Santa and Joey talked a little more they decided that they didn't want to confront Bob and Larry right away. They wanted a little revenge for trying to take over Christmas.
So for the next couple days, while all the other elves were going on with their lives without work, Joey was sneaking around the factory watching and listening to Larry and Bob to inform Santa on everything he heard. Just so they knew exactly what they were planning to do.
"Everything is going my way and in two weeks when Christmas is here and everyone around the world isn't getting their presents, Santa is going to be shut down," Joey overheard Larry telling Bob.
"Hey, since I'm now helping you, you know, taking over Christmas and all, what is my fair share in all of this?" asked Bob.
"You get to be co-president of all of this nonsense. Besides when we hide all of the reindeer the night before Mr.Claus has to deliver all the things kids want, he won't be able to anyway because all the reindeer will mysteriously be missing," replied Larry with an evil laugh.
Joey went right away to tell Santa what he heard and what they were planning to do. When he got done explaining everything, they started discussing all the possible ways to catch Bob and Larry in their little scheme. They thought of a simple, easy, but devious way to catch Larry while he was releasing the reindeer. They were going to put up cameras and put make-up on the reindeer so it made them look sick so no one wanted to touch them.
It is now exactly one week from Christmas and there is still a ton of kids toys that need to be made. Still Joey and Santa got all bundled up in their snow gear to go to the deer barn to put up the cameras and put the make-up on the reindeer. They had to do it themselves because all the other workers that would normally do it for them were still at home enjoying their break that Bob announced to everyone a couple days ago. When they got to the barn they hung the cameras, put on the make-up, and made sure not to step in the big surprises the reindeer left behind for them!
While all this has been going on little Whiskers refused to be forgotten. He has been secretly following Joey and Santa while they were planning revenge on Larry. Somehow Whiskers understood exactly what was going on, he knew what the plan was and he wanted to be part of it.
It is now Christmas Eve and any minute now Larry would be releasing the reindeer so Santa wouldn't be able to deliver the presents to the children. When Larry got to the reindeer barn he saw the sick reindeer, but that wouldn't stop him from taking over Christmas. He went to go unhook the gate when a searing pain shot through his leg. Whiskers bit his ankle.
"Ohhhhhhh! Mommy's cookies, that hurts!" shouted Larry.
With all the noise that Larry was making Santa and Joey sprang through the door to see what was the matter! They examined the barn and saw Whiskers now clinging to the leg of Larry hanging on with dear life. Joey ran to Larry to pry Whiskers off of him with pure confusion of what he was doing here. When Joey got his little mouse off of him they took Larry down to the factory to question him about why he was unhooking the reindeer gate.
"I told you I was going to feed them," lied Larry.
"Ohhh, admit it Larry, you were there to release the reindeer so Santa wouldn't be able to deliver the presents tonight. Santa would have been shut down, then someone else would have to take over and you wanted to be that someone," interrogated Joey.
"So what if I did? Anyway you don't have any proof!" exclaimed Larry.
"In fact we do, it's a new thing in the doll department, you see it's a brand new voice recording doll! Is that nifty or what? And when you were explaining to Bob what you were doing after he made that announcement you told him to do I had one of those dolls with me, so I used it. You see, and that's all the proof we need. So there you have it. We knew what you were doing this whole time," Joey explained to Larry.
"Ya, ya, ya, I did do all of that but you still can't deliver the presents. There are still two continents that need their presents to be made and you have to leave in five minutes," said Larry with a big smile in his face.
"But what you didn't know is that all this time we knew what you were doing, and we knew of all the work that needed to be done so we had all the elves working this whole time in Joey's apartment building!" replied Santa.
After that, Larry got sent to Elf Jail for trying to take over Christmas. Bob got to do two years of Elf Pick-Up for trying to help take over Christmas. Joey got promoted to Santa's assistant for catching someone trying to take over Christmas. Santa got to deliver all the presents to all the boys and girls all over the world. And well, Whiskers, he gets to eat all the cheese he wants now!
